Time for something out of the ordinary....
Article:  Boating Deaths Avoidablie with a Little Common Sense   http://www.centralohio.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/BA/20070527/NEWS01/705270304/1002

Gist: boating + alcohol + poor judgement - ability to swim = probable death by drowning

Not be insensitive, but: Seriously?  These things seem like common sense, don't they?  Any sober person would tell you you probably shouldn't drink on a boat, nor should you succumb to the thought that a lifevest is just too much trouble - particularly if you can't otherwise keep yourself afloat.

Evolution: is at work here.  'Nuff said.

On tubestock: Here at Dartmouth, there used to be a summer tradition called "Tubestock."  Turns out my graduating class is associated with its demise, but really, it wasn't our fault.  It was a bunch of drunk grad students who decided to go swimming.  One of them drowned.  The college was then forced to take a closer look at the whole tradition of Tubestock.  This is what I'm told, at least.

Upon closer inspection: The college decided, against some 08's nonsensical objections (something to the effect of "We have a right to have tubestock!") that Tubestock is far from a right of students.  It is illegal in a number of ways; local police was just kind enough to look the other way for oh-so-many years.  Turns out gathering that many people at the river is illegal, as are the shoddily constructed rafts, underage drinking,  and of course, the comibination of shoddily constructed rafts + underage drinking on said shoddily constructed rafts.  Huzzah for Ivy League sensibilities.
